The item you have is a vintage Siam sterling silver niello dragon boat brooch. These pieces of jewelry, also known as nielloware, were handcrafted in Thailand (formerly Siam) between the 1930s and 1970s and were popular souvenirs for US servicemen stationed overseas. Key InformationMaterial: The brooch is made of sterling silver, often stamped \"Siam Sterling\" or \"925\" on the back. Siam silver sometimes had a slightly higher silver content than standard 925 sterling.Technique: It uses a niello technique, where carved areas in the silver are filled with a dark llic amalgam (the black sections) and then polished smooth to create a dramatic contrast.Design: The design depicts a dragon boat or barge, known as the Suphannahong. These boats feature in the Thai national epic, the Ramakien (based on the Sanskrit Ramayana), which is a common source for motifs in niello jewelry.
